P R O D U C T S T H AT W O R K CARLISLE SYNTEC {what's new & noteworthy} Hailstorm Creates Opportunity to Increase Sustainability W HEN A MASSIVE HAILSTORM passed through Mineral Wells, Texas, buildings throughout the small city were destroyed. Built-up roofs on several facilities throughout the Mineral Wells School District suffered irreparable damage. In total, more than half a million square feet of the district's rooftops required replacement. The district turned the disaster into an opportunity to create more sustainable buildings. They were looking for an Energy Star-rated roof system that could provide two-inch hail coverage and a 90-mph wind warranty. Several roofing contractors submitted bids to re-roof the facilities. In total, bids for seven different systems were received, including four-ply built-up, Hyload, modified bitumen, EPDM, TPO and PVC. After reviewing several options, the district, along with the roofing contractor, opted for Carlisle SynTec Systems' FleeceBACK TPO membrane adhered with FAST Adhesive. Carlisle's FleeceBACK TPO membrane consists of a layer of TPO laminated to nonwoven polyester fleece backing. The fleece reinforcement adds toughness, durability and enhanced puncture resistance and the 115-mil thickness delivers 33 percent greater puncture resistance and breaking strength than standard 60-mil TPO. It also 26 passes Factory Mutual's severe hail test, the National Bureau of Standards ice ball test for hail up to three-inch diameter and holds a UL-2218 Class 4 rating. Carlisle's FAST Adhesive is a low-rise, two-component insulating polyurethane adhesive that offers a tenacious bond between the FleeceBACK membrane and underlying substrate. Using FAST Adhesive to install both the membrane and polyiso insulation also provides an energy- SCHOOL PLANNING & MANAGEMENT / JANUARY 2013 efficient benefit by eliminating the thermal gaps created by mechanical fasteners. A FleeceBACK and FAST installation is also less intrusive than most commercial roof system installations. By avoiding the noise and fumes common to most built-up roof installations, students could continue attending school in peace and safety, while the district was left with dependable rooftops that are well protected against future storms.
